Beaver Facts:
- Has several different color phases, most common is rust brown but can also be blonde to solid black
- The largest North American Rodent
- They have a unique paddle shape tail and webbed hind feet to power them through the water
- Self sharpening incisors which allow them to chew down any size tree
- Adult weights may vary from 20 to as much as 70 pounds
- Beavers are natural born engineers
- They build their dams in rivers, creeks or streams
- Dams are constructed of:
- sticks
- mud
- plant debris
- vegetation
- rocks
- Lodge is built upstream of damn, can either be a constructed lodge or a bank lodge. They will stock pile cut branches in front of lodge for winter food.
- Trees are felled for food as well as construction material. Will also feed on crops such as corn and soybeans
- Breeding takes place in late January and February
- Gestation is about 3-1/2 months
- Most litters are born between April and June
- Only one litter of young is born each year.
- An average litter size is between 3 and 5.
- Young are called kits
- Fully furred at birth
- Their eyes are opened at birth
- They can take to the water within days after birth but float like tiny corks. They will not learn how to dive until later.
- The young will stay with the adults to make up a family unit and may not leave until the age of 3
- Damage they will cause
- flooding due to damming up waterways
- danger to roadways, levies and structures from water
- destruction of ornamental trees
- landscapes
- They spend at lease 12 hours at night cutting trees, repairing the dams and working on their lodge.
- Diseases:
- Several different types of parasites, including intestinal parasites such as Giardia lamblia and tulermia.
