Opossum Facts:

  • Color is grayish white with
  • Body length is any where from 25-40 inches and tail makes up less than half its total body length
  • Prehensiled tail which it uses to stabilize itself when climbing & can sometimes suspend its body weight.
  • Males average 7-8 pounds
  • Females average 4-6 pounds
  • Most amount of teeth (50 teeth)
  • Tracks look like tiny hand prints with slightly distorted thumbs
  • Omnivorous, eats both plant and animal foods, but is also a great scavenger
  • Usually solitary animals
    • General home range of between 2-30 acres.
    • Active at night but sometimes seen during the day.
  • Breeding is from January to July
    • May raise 2-3 litters per year
    • An average litter size is around 7
    • Young are born 13 days after mating
    • Marsupial, having a pouch where the young are kept
    • Will stay with female for approximately 16-18 weeks
  • Life expectancy of approximately 8 years.
  • Not a highly destructive animal
  • Considered a general nuisance
  • Problems & messes they can cause:
    • getting into garbage cans
    • taking up residence in homes, attics, garages or other out buildings where they create quite a mess in their nesting area. Animal waste and urine can collect if they are left undisturbed creating an unhealthy environment.
