It may sound corny, but I’ve always loved animals and
the outdoors. Lots of kids do. Growing up in the Midwest
during the 70's was a sweet, wholesome time. TV, video
games and the like weren’t the lure they are today.
Back then, kids were encouraged to play outside,
get
dirty and make their own fun. On any given day you could find me outside somewhere in the woods rooting around with a stick, skipping stones by a creek or just marveling at whatever I uncovered-toadstools, worms, birds. I would live for the moment I stumbled upon an animal, so I tread lightly as I explored. Call it instinct.
When I turned 6, I took a crumpled handful of birthday money, and marched up to the local hardware store and bought an animal trap. I set it up in a cemetery brush dumping area, and the next day I had my first trapped animal, a huge opossum. He was awesome!

Why risk harm, disease or fines?
It’s a familiar scenario for the ATW hotline, the phone rings and on the other end? a frantic caller exclaims “I hear a scratching” or “I smell something awful and I don’t know where its coming from.”
Typically- some investigation has occurred but the uncertainty--‘what do I do now?” is unmistakable. And why not? To uncover, much less capture a wild animal is frightening.
With good reason. Bites, infection, and vicious encounters with humans and family pets happen all of the time...
